Looking at the Excision and Scraping Mole Removal Methods
Generally speaking there are two main methods that doctors employ nowadays in order to remove moles and they are excision or scraping. Although both don't exactly sound all that pleasant, the truth is that they are the most effective methods of getting rid of moles and are really fairly common nowadays. In fact, you won't even have to admit yourself to a hospital in order to have this form of minor surgery!
Basically, excision involves using a local anesthetic to prevent pain in the affected area and then cutting out the mole and the tissue beneath it with a scalpel. If the mole was deep set, then it might be necessary to stitch up the wound, but if it was fairly shallow and small then you might even get away with no stitches at all!
On the other hand, scraping also involves using local anesthetic to prevent pain in the affected area. Instead of cutting out the mole and tissue underneath it however, the doctor will actually 'scrape' the mole off with the scalpel in one smooth motion. In general this is only possible with moles that are not deep set, and it should not require any stitches at all. If the mole was not entirely removed in that one smooth motion however, and some tissue was left behind, the entire mole could eventually grow back.
Although these methods of treatment sound unpleasant, they are really very common nowadays. Unfortunately, there are several drawbacks to both of these mole removal methods and the chief among them is the cost. Another big drawback is the fact that these procedures almost always leave scars, especially if your skin is sensitive and tends to scar quite naturally.
Also, since both these treatments are minor surgery and actually involve an open wound, you're going to have to take care of it after the surgery is done. If you don't you run the risk of the wound becoming infected - and that really is the last thing that you want to happen in situations like this. Another alternative to these treatments would be laser surgery - but that is expensive and requires multiple sessions before it actually starts to be effective.
All things said and done, now that you know a little about excision and scraping you may be reviewing your decision to go for either. This is perfectly natural, and indeed it is one of the main reasons why alternative methods of mole removal have become so popular over the years!
